Although Lessing translated from the major European languages, and translation became a subject of literary criticism in the 18th century for the first time, Lessing s role in this has seldom been examined. The present volume contains papers on Lessing s theory and practice of translation, on his translations of individual authors, and on his contribution to the development of German vocabulary.
